Staff Information

Nigel Jones (FCA), Director

Trained with three-partner firm in York before moving to Binder Hamlyn in Leeds in 1982 where experience in SME was gained. Left in 1984 to join a two-partner firm where experience was gained working on advising clients on running their businesses and in dealing with tax investigations.

Set up Jones & Co on 1 October 1985 on a part-time basis before taking the plunge on a full-time basis on 29 February 1988. The business specialised in the start-up market for a number of years before branching out into established SMEs. Some clients have been with the firm since the outset and have grown with the firm.

Over the years a number of contacts have been built up which enables us to provide a wide range of services not normally associated with a firm of our size.

Nigel has experience of a large range of business activities, with a large number in the service sector. A lot of clients have started as start-ups and have grown into thriving small companies. Advice has been given on business and tax planning for these businesses.

A number of accounting packages are used including Sage and Opera. In addition the practice has tax and accounting software for its own use.

Jonathan Parkin (M.A.A.T), Trainee Certified Accountant

Jonathan has been at Jones & Co for over six years. He has a good knowledge of payroll and bookkeeping as well as the preparation of accounts of sole traders, partnerships and limited companies.

He has also set up a lot of accounting systems on excel and has a good working knowledge of Sage. He hopes to qualify in the near future.

Richard Stagg

Richard joined us in April 2008. He previously worked in Grimsby for three years with a small firm of accountants where he learned the basics of accounts preparation. He is now developing his skills in accountancy and also deals with payroll and basic taxation matters. He is training towards becoming a Chartered Certified Accountant.

Outside work he enjoys driving and is hoping to become a member of the Institute of Advanced Motoring.

Tricia Smith

Tricia helps out with accounts preparation and administrative tasks on a part-time basis. She retired from our firm in April 2007 after working for us for several years looking after the accounting function of one of our clients and helping out with administrative tasks. However, although she spends a lot of time at her holiday home in France, she still likes to help out when she is back in York. Previously she worked for 30 years in the accounts department of the Forestry Commission.

Staff Vacancy

We are looking for a person to join us as a semi-senior. This person should have at least one year’s experience working in an accountancy practice with a basic knowledge of the preparation of accounts. The job will include looking after the payroll of a number of clients - for which training will be provided – as well as the preparation of accounts and some general office duties.

We would hope that this person will be training towards an accountancy qualification such as the Association of Accounting Technicians or the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

Salary and benefits will be according to experience.
